Tyler O’Neill struck out looking at a painted low-and-away 3-2 fastball on the corner. Manny Pina struck out swinging at a 2-2 high-and-outside backdoor slider. After Jackie Bradley, Jr. drew a 3-2, 2-out walk, Pablo Reyes decided to swing at a 3-0 inside fastball and put good wood on it, but it came up just short of the wall on the track in left to end the inning.
Harrison Bader grounded an 0-1 inside fastball towards the middle to begin the top of the 3rd, but Wong was positioned right there over the bag for the out. Kim struck out looking at a 1-2 fastball right down the middle. Edman lined a 1-1 outside change off of the back of Peralta’s right leg. The ball deflected to the right side of the infield for a base hit. Peralta ran and tried to flip the ball to the first baseman with his glove, but it was too late. Edman stole second base on the 1-1 pitch to Carlson, but he was stranded there when Carlson offered at an elevated 1-2 fastball and struck out to end the inning. Peralta struck out looking at a 1-2 fastball on the corner low-and-away to start the bottom half. Wong flied a looping 2-2 outside curve to Carlson in front of the right field wall. Goldschmidt chased a 2-2 slider about a foot outside and struck out to start the top of the 4th. Arenado skied a 1-1 inside fastball that landed in the second deck of seats in left field just barely to the left of the foul pole, missing a homer by inches. The play was reviewed by the umpires, but the foul call was upheld. Arenado chased the very next pitch, a slider about a foot off the plate low-and-away, and struck out. DeJong popped a first-pitch low-and-away slider for Reyes at third in foul territory by the Cards’ dugout to end the inning. Taylor flied an inside 2-2 change to shallow right to lead off the bottom of the 4th. Shaw drove a 2-2 low slider to the right-center field gap that rolled to the wall for a double. Reyes grounded an 0-1 inside slider deep in the hole that just eluded DeJong’s grasp for a base hit to left. Peralta bunted the 1-1 pitch foul in range of Molina, but it hit the home plate umpire in the shoulder. Peralta struck out looking at the next pitch, an outside slider, and couldn’t get the sacrifice down. Wong lined a first-pitch low-and-away slider towards the middle, but DeJong made a nice diving grab over the bag to rob Wong of a hit and end the inning.
Kim broke his bat swinging wildly at an inside 1-2 slider to start the top of the 6th, squibbing it to the right side. Peralta covered first, but dropped Shaw’s flip, and Kim was safe. Kim hustled down the line and it would have been a close play either way, but he would have been out if Peralta had caught it, so Peralta was charged with a missed catch error. Edman popped a 2-0 high fastball to Urias at short on the outfield grass. Carlson flied an inside 3-2 fastball for Cain in left-center. Goldschmidt popped a high 1-1 fastball to Shaw in foul territory over by the Brewers’ dugout for a nice catch over the rail to end the inning. Cain drove a low-and-away 2-2 fastball to the gap in left-center. Bader stopped it from rolling to the wall, but he couldn’t stop the speedy Cain from sliding in safely at 2nd with a double to lead off the bottom of the 6th. Taylor struck out swinging at a low-and-in 2-2 fastball. Shaw drove a 3-2 hanging low slider to the gap in left-center. Bader raced over for it, but couldn’t get it and it bounced on the track and over the wall for a ground rule double to score Cain and give the Brewers a 1-0 lead.
That was it for KK after 88 pitches (the most he has thrown this season so far), and Shildt brought in Ryan Helsley to pitch to Urias. He drove a down-the-middle 3-0 fastball deep to center, but Bader caught it just in front of the wall. Shaw did not tag up for some reason. Pina drew a 3-2 walk on a close low-and-in cutter after being ahead in the count 3-0. Bradley smoked a low 1-1 fastball, but right at Edman at 2nd to end the inning.
Peralta came back out for the top of the 7th at 88 pitches. Arenado popped a first-pitch inside hanging slider to Shaw in foul territory to start the inning. Wong grounded a low 0-1 fastball up the middle for a 2-out base hit. The home plate umpire had to be checked out again when Cain fouled a fastball off of his mask. Edman flied a 1-2 outside change to left-center. Bader tagged up and ran to 3rd, beating Cain’s throw. Thomas decided to run to 2nd in the process of that throw, and the umpires ruled that he beat Wong’s tag at 2nd. It was close, but the Brewers decided not to challenge. With runners at 2nd and 3rd and 1 out, Carlson flied a 2-2 high-and-outside fastball to left. Taylor’s short throw had no change to get Bader, who scored on the Sac Fly to tie the game 1-1.
Goldschmidt grounded a first-pitch low-and-away change to short to end the inning. Shildt brought Giovanny Gallegos in to pitch the bottom of the 8th and he hit Taylor in the left shoulder with a 1-1 fastball to start things off. Shaw flied a low-and-in 1-1 fastball to shallow left. Taylor raced for 2nd on the 1-1 pitch to Urias. Molina’s throw was wide to Edman’s right, which delayed the tag. Taylor was called safe. Bradley torched a 2-2 high-and-outside straight-change to the deepest part of right-center, but Bader ran it down at the track against the wall. McKinney hit a 3-1 hanging inside slider for a sinking liner to right, but Carlson made a sliding catch forward to take us to extra innings.
Righty J.P. Feyereisen came out to pitch the top of the 10th for the Brewers. Because Molina made the last out for the Cards in the top of the 9th, he started the inning at 2nd base, and Shildt did not run for him. O’Neill grounded a low-and-in 2-2 change to 2nd base to move Molina to 3rd. Now Edmundo Sosa came in to run for Molina. With the infield in, Bader popped an outside 2-1 slider to first in foul territory. Justin Williams pinch hit for Gallegos and drew a 3-2 walk. Edman chased a low 2-0 change and grounded it to 2nd to strand runners at the corners. Alex Reyes came out to pitch the bottom of the 10th for the Cards. Andrew Knizner came out to catch in the #6 spot to replace Molina, and the Cards are out of bench players. Billy McKinney started the inning at 2nd base. Avisail Garcia pinch hit for Feyereisen and flied a first-pitch low-and-away slider to Bader in left-center and the runner stayed put. Wong was intentionally walked to get to Cain and put the double play in order. Cain struck out swinging at an elevated 0-2 98 mph fastball. The 1-1 pitch to Taylor was a low slider that Knizner allowed to sneak through his legs for a wild pitch to move the runners to 2nd and 3rd. He put his mitt down and open, but not far enough. It turned out not to matter, because Taylor chased a 2-2 slider in the dirt to strike out and end the inning.
Righty Brad Boxberger came out for the top of the 11th and Edman started the inning at 2nd base. Carlson slowly grounded a low-and-away 1-2 change for Urias over the 2nd base bag to move Edman to 3rd. Bradley struck out looking at an outside 0-2 backdoor slider. McKinney chased an 0-2 slider in the dirt to end the game.
