Sometimes nothing changes.
After a weekend where four of the top six teams were did not take the field and the two that did posted comfortable wins, the top of this week’s bowl projections look a lot like last week’s edition.
Or more specifically, they look exactly like last week. Alabama continues to hold the top spot in the College Football Playoff field followed by Ohio State, Clemson and Notre Dame.
The Irish furthered their potential at-large case by beating Boston College soundly. A win at North Carolina in two weeks could put them in position to make the field even with a loss to Clemson in the ACC championship game.
The rest of the New Year’s Six also held steady. Miami nearly got tripped up by Virginia Tech, but a late rally kept the Hurricanes in line for the Orange Bowl. Oregon also needed a comeback in the second half at Washington State to hold its place in the Fiesta Bowl.
Could the outlook be different next week? The schedule offers the opportunity for change. Ohio State could get tested this week when No. 10 Indiana comes to town.
No. 7 Cincinnati is looming as a dark horse contender. The Bearcats visit Central Florida with the opportunity to boost their credentials with an impressive win. No. 12 Wisconsin and No. 20 Northwestern are unbeaten, and one will emerge from their clash with an impressive victory that keeps its title hopes alive.
The bowl lineup for the postseason stands at 37 games with the status of the Las Vegas Bowl uncertain. Teams in bold have accepted berths.
