Kurelic: Derrick Davis Jr., elite corner impressed with OSU – 247Sports

Good afternoon Bucknuts subscribers! There is plenty going on with Ohio State football recruiting so let’s get started! I will of course have plenty more throughout the night and tomorrow.

1) On Saturday not too long after the Buckeyes’ defeated Nebraska 52-17, I posted a “Recruits React” article to the Ohio State season opening win. That article included the reactions from some of the top targets on the Buckeyes’ 2022 and 2023 boards. One top Ohio State 2022 target it did not include was elite cornerback Will Johnson from Grosse Pointe (Mich.) South.

The 6-foot-3 and 190-pound Johnson, who plays cornerback, wide receiver and returns punts for South, talks often with Ohio State defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs. Johnson had this reaction to the Buckeyes’ win over the Cornhuskers.

“It was a great win for me to watch,” Johnson said. “I watched the whole game and you can easily tell how explosive their offense can be. And if they can keep it up on defense I don’t see anyone stopping them. Hopefully I can get up there as soon as possible.”

Johnson, who’s father Deon Johnson played for Michigan, has over two dozen scholarship offers including Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, LSU, Penn State, Oklahoma, USC, Nebraska, Texas A&M and Tennessee.

Johnson is a 5-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite. He is the country’s No. 7 overall 2022 prospect, the No. 3 cornerback and the No. 1 prospect in Michigan.
